ISF: Looking to the Future

For the past 15 years ISF has worked diligently to support our shared vision of sustainable forest management that meets the needs of wildlife, landowners, communities and future generations on the north coast of California.

Our efforts to develop 3rd party certification of sustainable forest management practices through Smartwood and the Forest Stewardship Council influenced forest management practices throughout the Pacific Northwest—and beyond.

Our efforts to develop regional capacity to create beautiful hardwood products from native hardwoods proved the viability of hardwood milling, drying and manufacturing techniques for our native species and disseminated that information to wood products businesses acting on our vision throughout the region.

In the 15 years since ISF was founded economic, ecological and social factors impacting forest management have changed. Increased wood products consumption, fuel loads, global warming, real estate values and exurban development encroaching on intact forestland create a mandate for Sustainable Forest Management.

It has never been more important to articulate objective analysis of the issues facing California forests. These increased pressures on working forests motivate industry supporters, conservation groups and environmentalists to carefully examine the potential for cooperation in protecting existing working forests. In this context ISF continues to work with a broad cross section of forest and community stakeholders to develop innovative solutions to complex forest management issues.

Today ISF projects move forward in a substantially changed economic context and an environment of substantially reduced funding opportunities for our programs. We need your support to continue our work.

ISF continues to make significant contributions to efforts to protect working forests and implement sustainable forest management on the north coast:

  • Facilitating knowledge and information sharing among a cross section of stakeholders through the Sustainable Forest Council, the 2004 ISF State of Sustainability Report, and the 2005 Future Forests working session;
  • Promoting viable strategies to protect working forests and support sustainable management such as Programmatic Timber Environmental Impact Reports as a watershed based forest planning tool, Tradable Development Rights to reduce forest fragmentation, and Working Forest Bonds to support long-rotation all-age management and forestland acquisition by community forestry groups;
  • Participating in conversations with Redwood Forest Foundation and the Buckeye Forest Project on working forestland acquisitions and regulatory reform for non-industrial landowners;
  • Supporting our local Fire Safe Council's efforts to implement fuel hazard reduction, community fire safe planning and investigate effective responses to the increasing threat of Sudden Oak Death in regional forests in cooperation with the Humboldt County office of the UC Cooperative Extension program; and
  • Integrating Nick’s Intern’s (high school aged students interested in ecological management practices) into our on-the-ground forest management projects to build community capacity.

With your support ISF will continue to be an informed and innovative advocate for the realistic vision of sustainability that our community brings to forest management issues.
